Barn Raising

The red barn you see in this painting of my place was built in 1993. I designed the structure and made the construction drawings based on favorite barns I’ve studied over the years. A couple of friends and I poured the slab foundation. Then my dad came up to visit and we spent several days framing the walls and laying them on the slab and the ground around the foundation. Then one fine day we had an old-fashioned barn raising. About 40 people raised the walls, build the staircase, installed the second story floor, raised all the rafters, and sheathed most of the first story, all in one day.
